Background facts:
The Slazenger Eclipse racquet was introduced in 1914. The piece shown here comes from the Johnson family in Stuttgart and was used by the family’s mother. It was donated to the Berlin Tennis Gallery by Sabine Johnson.
According to The Book of Rackets, the Eclipse was described as follows: “Best is best thro' the world. Trademark. Patent stringing. When not in use must be kept in a press. New in season 1914.”
The name Eclipse, introduced in the year the First World War began, may have been chosen with a sense of what was to come.
